Job title:  Master Control Operator
Objective of the Position : The position holder will be required to set up, controls and monitors television broadcasting equipment to transmit television programs and station breaks to viewing audience: Reads television programming log to ascertain name of program or station break, and at what time program or station break is scheduled to air. Verifies voice-over recording, using tape equipment, and informs supervisor of inconsistencies. Loads videotape equipment with videotapes containing program or station break or presses button on switching equipment to access videotape equipment. Subtracts pre-roll time from on-air time to determine at what time to begin pre-roll. Turns video and color monitors on and presses button to start videotape equipment.

Role Profile

1. Maintain specialist equipment for video production, broadcast and satellite transmission.

2. Setting up and monitoring audiovisual links between units in different locations.

3. Evaluate technical capabilities of facilities according to transmission plan.

4. Performing routine maintenance on equipment and detecting when and what kind of maintenance is needed.

5. Conducting test inspections of services or process to evaluate quality and or performance.

Repairing broadcasting equipment when they break down or malfunction

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Selects source, such as satellite or studio, from which program will be recorded

2. Previews scheduled program to ensure that signal is functioning and program is ready for transmission

3. Observes monitors and converses with station personnel to set audio and video levels and to verify station is on-air

4. Edits manuals, schedules programs, and prepares reports outlining past and future programs, including content

5. Ensure hitch free transmission of the channel’s transmission

6. Manage and track satellite quality

Person Specification:

  • Candidate should possess a minimum bachelor degree in broadcasting engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, satellite engineering or any other related field of study.
  • Candidates must have at least 5 years experience in relevant field out of which at least 2 years must be in television broadcasting environment.
  • Ability to maintain specialist equipment for video production broadcast and satellite transmission.
  • Knowledge and experience in setting up and monitoring audio visual links between units in different locations.
  • Knowledge and or experience in setting up and operating editing facilities in post production suites.
  • Ability to keep abreast of constant changes in technology by interpreting new systems, technologies and equipments, especially internet technologies.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and using awareness of best practice in health and safety for the work place.
  • Ability to set up and operate equipment and transmission links during outside broadcasts.
  • Experience in interpreting and implementing instructions and requests from producers, directors and other colleagues.
